There are plenty of great towns to visit in Lancaster County. Whether you’re coming to get a glimpse of the Amish community or just looking for an escape from city life, a vacation spent exploring these small towns and villages is always worthwhile. One of our favorite places to visit is Bainbridge, PA. Located 40 minutes away from Historic Smithton Inn, this small town only has a population of just 1,000 residents. The surrounding area is great for a day trip, with beautiful hiking trails and incredible wineries to explore after a long day in the countryside!

Don't Miss Out on a Fantastic Day Trip to Bainbridge, PA

Chickies Ridge

If you enjoy rock climbing, hiking, or botany, take a trip to Chickies Ridge. The ridge ends at Chickies Rock overlooking the Susquehanna River. This rock is a popular spot for rock climbing and is surrounded by excellent hiking trails.

For visitors interested in unique plants, Chickies Rock hosts one of the rarest ferns in the eastern United States; Bradley’s spleenwort. Try to find one and snap a photo! Be careful when exploring the area, though. There have been stories of ghosts and gremlins who wander about, searching for lost lovers and sneaking food from unsuspecting picnickers!

Nissley Vineyards

Bainbridge is home to one of the best wineries in the region. Nissley Vineyards is a family-owned company that’s been in operation since the mid-1970s. J. Richard Nissley and his son John took a chance with the vineyard, as there were only a few in Pennsylvania at the time. (It was believed that California and France were the only places that could produce acceptable wine.) The Nissley's proved this theory wrong, and the vineyard thrived. Richard even went on to found the Pennsylvania Wine Association and served as its first president.

Today, grandson Jonas Nissley runs the family business and manages 40 acres of vines with 14 varieties of grapes. Visit and enjoy a self-guided tour followed by a wine tasting! It’s a great way to end the day with your loved ones.
