Who Was Charles Demuth?

Charles Demuth was an American painter and watercolorist, born in Lancaster in 1883. He is known for developing a style of painting known as Precisionism and turning to oils late in his career. Rising through the hardships, Demuth graduated from Franklin and Marshall Academy and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He even traveled to Paris to be a part of the avant-garde scene. Throughout his life, Demuth produced over a thousand works of art. This includes the well-known “My Egypt,” which was inspired by grain elevators in Lancaster.

Paintings

There are plenty of things to see during your tour of the Demuth Museum. Travel back in time and discover a variety of collections and exhibitions featuring Charles’ history and artwork, as well as a display of his evolving style and artistic achievements. Learn about his personal life as you roam through his art studio and home.

Be sure to take a peek at the gardens on the way out! The flowers were cultivated by Demuth’s mother and featured in his renowned floral works. Historical buildings depicted in his paintings aren’t far away, either; you can spot some of them from his studio window. Or, visit a few!
