The History of Lancaster County Mud Sales

Mud sales have been a Lancaster County tradition since the mid-1960s. Named for the condition of the thawing ground in late winter, these huge events draw up to 20,000 people annually. They’re a way of welcoming the upcoming spring season while simultaneously helping to support local volunteer fire companies. Across Lancaster County, mud sales are held both indoors and outdoors, for locals and tourists to enjoy our charming country scenery.

What Can You Find at Mud Sales?

You can find anything from authentic Amish quilts, furniture, and other crafts to livestock, sheds and barns, buggies, construction equipment, and building materials. Warm Up on a Chilly February Morning With Some Good Eatin'

Every Saturday from late February to mid-April, mud sales are featured around Lancaster County. Most of these sales are similar to garage sales, starting at 8am and lasting into the early afternoon. The best part about these mud sales, however, is the delicious food you can experience. Pennsylvania Dutch treats await your palate, from chicken corn soup (a favorite staple) to sticky buns to start off your day with a sweet tooth fix. There are plenty of yummy homemade foods to indulge in while you are shopping around, and it may just be your favorite thing about mud sales!
