How to Make the Most of Your Visit to Longwood Gardens, PA

Why Is Longwood Gardens a Must-See?

Longwood Gardens is known as one of the greatest outdoor experiences, not only in Pennsylvania, but in the world, and when you see how beautiful it is, you’ll understand why. These stunning gardens were built by Pierre S. du Ponte, an influential gardener, between 1870 and 1921. They are referred to as a “real Eden”, especially in the spring when the flowers are in bloom and each acre bursts with color. A summertime visit also makes for a perfect day—the sun is out, the sky is blue, and colorful flowers surround!

Touring the Gardens

We love to recommend Longwood Gardens to our guests, and we want you to enjoy it to the fullest. There is so much to do and see that one day is hardly enough! If it’s your first visit, we advise you to spend the entire day there—just bring sunscreen or an umbrella to protect against sun damage.

A guided tour is an immersive and interactive way to explore the gardens. Follow your guide through the garden’s highlights, and listen as he or she teaches you about history and horticulture. Longwood Gardens offers a dozen different tours, and some of them are seasonal, so check the calendar to see what’s in bloom during your visit! One of our favorite tours is the birdwatching hike. If you love nature and wildlife, it will be the perfect match!

Grab a Bite to Eat

After your tour of the gardens, you’ll probably be hungry. Stop at September Farms for Amish Cheese and lots of other great local foods (including ice cream). If you want to stay in the gardens a little longer, you can dine on-site! Longwood Gardens has several delicious dining options to choose from. 1906 is a stunning establishment that serves exquisite cuisine. If you’re looking for something more casual, The Cafe is ideal for a quick sandwich, comforting bowl of soup, or fresh salad. For a unique experience, stop by the Beer Garden for traditional pub fare.

Entertainment

The illuminated fountain shows are a long-running tradition at Longwood Gardens, and a must-see for any new or recurring visitor. The Open Air Theatre Fountain Show lasts five minutes and runs throughout the day, so you can either end your visit there or continue afterward.

Are you visiting between May and September? If so, you have to attend the Festival of Fountains! This spectacular event features colorful, 175-foot jets and inspiring music.

Did you know that Longwood Gardens also host concerts in the summer? Check out their concert schedule and see wonderful performers play on the lawn.
