Walk Through Samuel S. Lewis State Park

Samuel S. Lewis State Park is only 35 minutes away from the Historic Smithton Inn and offers great hiking, stargazing events, disc golf, and sledding in the winter! Climb to the top of Mt. Pisgah, an 885-foot-high ridge that separates Kreutz Creek Valley to the north and East Prospect Valley to the south. There are three hiking trails to explore. The first, Hilltop Trail, is one mile long and winds through a pine plantation. You’ll pass by interesting rock formations and get a spectacular scenic view. Hikers can also look at the George E. Stine Arboretum, which contains European beech, persimmon, and other unique species of plants. The Shortcut Trail is a shorter loop that cuts through the pine plantation, and the Back Trail loops through a diverse hardwood forest.

The front nine was built in the early 1920s, and the back nine was added in the mid-30s. The course is suitable for players of all skill levels. Best of all, you don’t have to be a member to play and visitors can book their tee times online. After you’ve finished your game, stop in at the on-site restaurant BrewVino and enjoy a delicious meal!

Ride on the York County Heritage Rail Trail

For an ultimate adventure along the 21 miles of trails weaving throughout beautiful forest landscapes, visit the York County Heritage Rail Trail! The Rail Trail runs parallel to the Northern Central Railway line, a previously inactive rail line. The rail is now active and features the 1860s replica train named Steam Into History No. 17. Passengers on the train learn about the railway’s role in the growth of the small towns along the route. If you’re hoping to get a closer look at the train, hiking and biking are popular ways to explore.
