Ephrata PA is a fantastic small town in Lancaster County, PA, also known as Amish Country or PA Dutch Country. Ephrata (pronounced Eff-ra-ta) is located in the northern part of the county and is best known for being home to the Ephrata Cloister. Rich in history, tradition, and scenic beauty, this Amish small town is a top destination for anyone visiting the area. What’s great about Ephrata is you can stay and visit a charming town with tons to do, while being outside, but close to the traditional “Amish tourist fray”.
Here’s our list of things to do in Ephrata. They include everything from shopping & eating to history & outdoor adventures.
The Green Dragon Farmers Market is one of the largest farm markets in the state of Pennsylvania. It’s sort of a cross between a farmers market, flea market & “fell off the back of the truck in NYC” market. You can buy everything from Amish foods, furniture & crafts, to dog treats, fresh vegetables, baked goods and cell phone accessories. The Green Dragon is only open on Fridays, from 9 am to 9 pm. It’s people watching and shopping at its best!
The Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, also know as WERT, is a wonderful trail that connects downtown Ephrata to downtown Lititz. The trail is 8 miles long and relatively flat. What’s great about this trail is there are plenty of great stops along the way. You can see Nibbles McGibble’s hamlet, shop at Reiff’s Amish market (in season), and pass by Amish farms & wooded areas.
For history or WW2 buffs who have seen the mini-series “Band of Brothers”, you’ll be familiar with Major Dick Winters, one of the heroes of Easy Company. Dick Winters’ family is from Ephrata and he lived here until his family moved to Lancaster City when he was in elementary school. Ephrata installed a replica of a statue Major Winters that stands in Normandy, France in 2015. Our monument, the Winters Leadership Memorial, celebrates all soldiers who have served, and hope that inspires the young people of Ephrata to be strong leaders like Ephrata’s hometown hero, Dick Winters.
